3 Years of Sewing
There was a small girl. She was born in a small village named Mannar in Sri Lanka which has currently become a city for her. Before a decade, Mannar was a village because all other places around the village had a lot of facilities and developments compared to her village. The most important thing that mattered to that girl is quite normal like what every girl in her teenage desires which is wearing cute dresses. Unfortunately, she couldn’t get those in her village. So, I guess she did create an unconscious desire to wear stunning dresses in her mind.
When she was a kid playing with dolls, she used the sewing machine in her home to attach pieces of cloth to make some clothing for the doll. That was the first time she sew. Later when she was an adult, she used to mend her clothes by hand and sometimes use the sewing machine so that they fit her body well. Well, the girl is me.
When I look back to 3 years ago, I just used the sewing machine to attach and mend. Not really into it. Through academics, I got introduced to clothing pattern-making some time ago. I wasn’t interested in it because I haven’t tried it. It seemed to me that it involves a lot of paperwork like drawing, cutting, adjusting, and pasting again and again. At that time, it looked like a lot of processes. So, I didn’t impress by it.
When the corona pandemic started at the beginning of 2020, we were compelled to stay indoors which means we got plenty of time compared to our normal lifestyle. So, did I. I got an idea. Why don’t I sew some dresses out of my old clothes? So, I searched for Youtube videos and created a blouse. I am impressed by the blouse I made. It looked fantastic on me among all the dresses I have worn in terms of how they fit my body.
All the dresses or any type of clothing which I have bought in stores should go through some sewing before I wear them because I am not belonging to the standard sizes small, medium, or large. I am always in between. It sucks not being able to fit any standard sizes. For those who felt the same I do “Don’t lose hope”. So when I made the blouse, it made me happy, and I wanted more happiness, in other words, I started to sew many clothes and made patterns. I think it is really hard to bring 3 years of experience into a small article in Medium which I always like to keep simple and sweet. So I will be writing another one where I will be sharing what I learned which will help you if you follow the pursuit of designing dresses.
Happy Reading.
